Redesign public space!

PRISMA at the final Trans|formator:in conference

How can streets and squares be transformed into livable public spaces—even with limited budgets? This question was the focus of the "Public Space Transformation Day," held on October 5, 2026, at the Cobenzl in Vienna. Marking the conclusion of the *Trans|formator:in* research project, the event centered on practical tools, insights from pilot projects, and dialogue among policymakers, municipal administrators, and urban planners.

PRISMA colleague Nina Grohmann presented the digital "Tactical Measures Toolkit" on-site—a tool we designed and developed technically as part of the project. She highlighted how the tool assists planners and municipal representatives in selecting appropriate measures for redesigning streetscapes: "Public spaces don't have to be transformed in a single step; tactical measures allow for testing new ideas and learning from them to inform long-term redesigns. Those less familiar with the topic can use our *Trans|formator:in* demo system to get an overview of potential measures and real-world examples. From there, they can explore further: What might work for us? How can we combine these measures? What do we want to try out?"

The presented library comprises 36 measures, complete with assessments regarding traffic safety, accessibility, climate adaptation, the mobility transition, and the quality of the public realm. Ready-made project templates make it easier to get started with the planning process. In this way, we are making knowledge from the research project digitally accessible and supporting the transition from initial idea to the concrete design of public spaces!
